Head Rice Yield Reduction Rates Caused by Moisture Adsorption

چکیده
An empirical rate equation was developed to predict head rice yield reduction for rough rice exposed to moisture adsorptive conditions. Time of exposure, initial moisture content, and relative humidity were significant to the reductions in head rice yield caused by moisture adsorption. An equation used to predict the number of kernels which fissured upon exposure to various environments was modified and evaluated for use in describing head rice yield reductions. A decrease in head rice yield of greater than 20 percentage points was found in the lowest initial moisture content rice samples (9% wet basis) subjected to the highest relative humidity of 90%. Lower reductions in head rice yield were found in the higher initial moisture content samples and at the lower relative humidity of 70%. Most of the damage to the kernels occurred within the first 24 hours of exposure to the humid air.

Relating Rice Milling Quality Changes During Adsorption to Individual Kernel Moisture Content Distribution
Cereal Chem. 75(1):129–136 Several varieties of rough rice that were either stored for an extended period of time or freshly harvested were conditioned to initial moisture contents ranging from 10 to 17%. After the individual kernel moisture content distributions were measured, the samples were soaked in water at temperatures ranging from 10 to 40°C. The samples were then dried and milled. The ...
متن کاملRICE QUALITY AND PROCESSING Physical and Functional Characteristics of Broken Rice Kernels Created by Rapid Moisture Adsorption
Fissuring caused by rapid moisture adsorption generates appreciable amounts of broken kernels on subsequent milling, thereby reducing the economic value of rice. This study investigated how rapid moisture adsorption affects the extent of kernel fissuring in rice lots, as well as the physical and functional characteristics of broken kernels that result from milling such lots. Pure-line, long-gra...

The use of low air temperatures (79 to 93 °F) and relative humidities (19% to 68%) to dry thin-layer samples of rough rice to the desired 12.5% moisture content was investigated. Drying rates and durations and their effects on the quality parameters of head rice yield, color, and pasting viscosity of longand medium-grain rice cultivars harvested at 19.6% and 17.5% moisture contents, respectivel...

Pre-harvest desiccation of rapeseed crop may allow a more timely harvest as well as increase the speed and harvest operation efficiency as a second crop after rice. An effective desiccant which could be used as a harvest-aid with no negative effects on rapeseed yield and quality would be advantageous for oil seed crop producers and may reduce yield losses with no interferential effects on rice ...
متن کاملMilling Quality of California Medium-grain Rice
California’s medium-grain rice industry experiences a wide range of head rice yield (HRY). Average moisture of a representative paddy rice sample is the commercially used predictor of optimum harvest date to achieve high HRY. A two-year field study demonstrated that average rice moisture alone is not an adequate predictor of HRY. The history of rice moisture caused by varying meteorological con...
